This summer, we will be hosting our very first Equip Conference here at Calvary! We will welcome pastor Dan Kimball as our keynote speaker, the author of How (Not) to Read Your Bible, who will uncover the keys to interpretation for us as modern readers. Whether you have been reading the Bible for decades or you have yet to crack it open, this conference is for you! We will answer questions like: What does it mean to believe that the Bible is without error? How do I make sense of difficult passages in the Bible that confuse or disturb me? Our goal for this weekend is to equip our church with the tools to navigate biblical truths with clarity and confidence.
On Friday evening, Dan will explore the problems with the Bible and why Christians can have a hard time approaching God’s Word. You will be both inspired and prepared to interact with the Word of God on a deeper level, removing barriers that may have previously kept you from making sense of the Bible. In Saturday morning sessions, we will dive into the foundations of biblical literacy, answering questions like, “Where did the Bible come from?”, “Who decided what goes in it?”, and “Is everything in the Bible true?”. We also unpack specific examples of challenging topics within Scripture, strengthening our understanding of the Word and, in turn, our faith!

Keynote Speaker: Dan Kimball
Dan Kimball is one of the founders of Vintage Faith Church in Santa Cruz (2004) where he currently serves on staff. He is the author of several books on leadership, church, and culture, including How (Not) to Read Your Bible. He is also a faculty member at Western Seminary as Vice President of Church Mission and Strategy and is Associate Professor of Leadership and Theology. He also leads the ReGeneration Project, which exists to equip and encourage new generations to think theologically and participate in the mission of the church. He has a master’s degree from Western Seminary and a doctorate degree from George Fox University. Dan is married to Becky and has two daughters, Katie and Claire. His passion is to see Christians follow and represent Jesus in the world with love, intelligence, and creativity.
Dan was not a Christian growing up, but while he was in college, he began wondering whether or not the Bible was a mythical story, and people simply became Christians because of their geographic and cultural context. You can read the rest of Dan’s testimony and more about his current endeavors on his Vintage Faith Church profile or at dankimball.com.
